Statistics for eDiscovery: Sampling, Assumptions and eDiscovery
What are the primary assumptions of sampling?
In random sampling the primary assumption is that every object has an equal chance of being chosen for the sample. Most statistical tests assume that the two groups being compared (for example) are randomly sampled, that the two groups have the same distribution, and that the measure of one group does not affect the measure of the other group (called “Independence”). Some statistical tests have additional assumptions. If these assumptions are violated, there is a risk that the conclusions reached will be invalid. Most tests are tolerant of some deviations from these assumptions and less tolerant of other deviations.
