Statistics for eDiscovery: Representative Samples in eDiscovery
What is the best way to get a representative sample?
Although there are several sampling methods, the best way to get a representative sample is to choose objects randomly. Each object has an equal chance of being included in the sample, so that whatever observations we make of the sample are likely to apply within some error limits, to the population as a whole.
A simple random sample selects objects at random, regardless of the subgroup. A stratified random sample will select objects from each subgroup (each stratum) in proportion to that subgroup’s representation in the population. For smaller sample sizes, stratified random samples ensure not only that each object has an equal chance of appearing in the sample, but also that each subgroup is then guaranteed to be included in the sample. For large samples, there is less of a difference between simple random samples and stratified random samples
